For pointed pencil shapes, gently push the tip former knob inward and downward to release the tip former.
For rounded pencil shapes, click tip former back in place.

Have brought quite a few different sharpeners over the years but this one is the best I have found the lid stays on firmly and the shavings are stored in there, I empty every couple of times to avoid build up, the last one I brought was a benefit but this is superior to that one.
