Reveal Brighter, Refined Skin
A good exfoliator can transform the look and feel of your skin, helping to sweep away dull surface cells and reveal a brighter, smoother complexion underneath. This edit brings together face scrubs, liquid exfoliants, and gentle resurfacing formulas so you can build a routine that supports clarity, softness, and long-term radiance.
There are two main types of face exfoliators. Physical exfoliators use fine particles or buffing agents to polish the skin, creating instant smoothness and helping to lift dry patches. Brands like ESPA and First Aid Beauty offer nourishing face scrubs that support hydration while gently refining texture.
Chemical exfoliators work differently, using acids such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid to dissolve dead skin cells without the need for friction. Formulas from The Ordinary, Dermalogica, and Perricone MD are popular for brightening, smoothing, and improving overall tone. Some facial exfoliators combine both approaches for a more intensive result, offering deeper renewal while still respecting the skin’s barrier.
Most exfoliators are best used two to three times a week, depending on your skin type and the strength of the formula. Chemical exfoliants are often more effective at night, when the skin is in repair mode, and you’re less exposed to UV sensitivity. Used consistently, they help other skincare products absorb better and support a more even, refined complexion.

How do I know whether to choose a physical or chemical exfoliator?
It depends on your skin’s sensitivity and goals. Physical face scrubs give instant smoothness, while chemical exfoliators (AHA/BHA/PHA) target dullness, blemishes, and uneven texture with less friction. Many people with sensitive skin prefer chemical exfoliation because it’s gentler.
How often should I exfoliate without damaging my skin?
It is recommended to exfoliate up to 2-3 times per week, but it varies. Stronger acids may be used less frequently, while very gentle formulas may work daily. If your skin feels tight, stings, or becomes flaky, reduce frequency.
Can exfoliators help with breakouts or clogged pores?
Yes. BHA exfoliants like salicylic acid penetrate pores to break down excess oil and help prevent congestion. Consistent exfoliation helps reduce blackheads and improve overall clarity.
Should I exfoliate in the morning or evening?
Many skincare enthusiasts prefer using chemical exfoliators at night, avoiding immediate sun exposure and making room for hydrating products afterwards. Physical scrubs can be used at either time, provided you follow with moisturiser. Always remember to apply SPF to protect your new sensitive skin layer.
